The Tauplitz is considered to be one of Austria’s best kept secrets. It is family-friendly, there is guaranteed snow and it is perfect for the more sedate winter sports. There is so much fun and adventure on offer until right into the spring months!
The Tauplitzalm is sort of like the opposite number to resorts such as Ischgl or St. Anton. Small. Quiet. Not overpriced. Plenty of nature. Very little hustle and bustle. This is why – subjectively, I might add – I would say it is one of the most beautiful alps in Austria. On a personal note, I would add that I also find it the most romantic alps of them all. This is because my parents met here decades ago. My mum worked in a hotel and my dad came to do some cross-country skiing training. We spent many family holidays on the Tauplitz when I was a child. We continue to enjoy coming here.
More sedate winter sports for all the family
Other reasons why I like the Tauplitzalm so much It is genuine. It is the kind of place you can hear the snow sprinkling down from the branches of the fir trees. A place where you can simply stand still right in the middle of nowhere and listen to nature. It is also the perfect place to leisurely enjoy winter sports far away from the madding crowds. Examples of great winter sports activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoe hiking and winter. You can naturally do regular skiing too! When I spend time here with my family, I always feel that the Tauplitz is a little spot in Austria where you can enjoy a truly carefree time, where the children can run around freely and where parents can truly exhale deeply and relax.
There are no cars allowed in the Tauplitzalm.
You soon discover what is special about the Tauplitzalm when you travel here. The only way to get here is via a ten kilometre long toll road which takes you higher up towards the plateau from Bad Mitterndorf. Then you have to leave your car in the car park. You are not allowed to drive your car on the Tauplitzalm.
Some regular visitors just strap on their touring or cross-country skis and make their own way along the final stretch.
A small but excellent skiing and cross-country skiing region.
Fortunately, the Tauplitzalm Plateau is not so well known. This high plateau located in the Toten Gebirge mountain range in Styria is one of the oldest winter sports regions in Austria. The first tow lift was constructed way back in 1936. Touring skiers and professional cross-country skiers have always come here to train, including my own father back in the day. It is great that despite these visitors, Tauplitz continues to enjoy a tranquil dream-like existence. This is because only very special types of people come here; namely those who want to connect with nature.
Guaranteed snow cover until April.
You can go cross-country skiing and winter hiking on the Tauplitzalm Plateau right from the beginning of November. The snow cover increases to several metres thick as the winter progresses. As the alp virtually acts as hollow for the snow to gather in, it remains here for a considerably long time. The winter season does not end until around Easter, anytime from March to April. This is the time I particularly like to visit the region with my family. Even though everything is green in the valley, we are greeted by a sun-drenched snowy landscape as if right from a picture book when we reach the higher parts of the alp. What a glorious feeling!
