‘Schifoan is des Leiwandste, wos ma si nur vurstölln ko.’ (This roughly translates as ‘skiing is the best thing you can possibly imagine.’) Many Austrian ski fanatics know these lines from a famous song called ‘Skiing’ by the legendary Austrian singer Wolfgang Ambros. Skiing doesn’t just mean having lots of fun and adventure on the pistes, it also means having to plunder your bank account. This is especially the case if you are dashing off to the slopes with the whole family. However, skiing doesn’t always have to be expensive. We have compiled a few great and (above all) affordable tips for you:
‘Ski for free’ at the Weissbriach ski resort
The Weissbriach ski resort in the beautiful Gitsch Valley is not just affordable for families, but is actually ‘free’. Your first night’s stay at the JUFA Hotel Gitschtal – Landerlebnis*** actually entitles you to a free ski pass!
There is a huge variety of winter sports facilities on offer: A practice area with a children’s lift, three tow lifts, a ski school, ski and snowboard hire and cosy ski huts all promise perfect days of skiing fun and adventure.

If you don’t want to spend the whole day on the pistes, you could spend a few warm and relaxing hours enjoying the adventure pools and sauna complex at CamboMare (German website) which is only 11 kilometres away.
Winter fun and adventure at the Zlaim am Grundlsee ski resort
You are promised an ‘exceptionally’ good holiday with the family at Zlaim (German website) with fantastic views over Lake Grundl and the surrounding alpine landscape. Your little ones can try out their first moves at Petzis Kinderland which offers a magic carpet conveyor lift, a tubing toboggan run, fun wavy pistes and a slalom course. The adults meanwhile will be in their element as they career along the downhill runs into the valley.
A one-day family pass (2 adults and 2 children) costs € 75. The JUFA Hotel Bleiburg/Pliberk – Sport-Resort*** provides the perfect base from which to embark on your fantastic winter sports adventures. Nearby Lake Pirkdorf is a hotspot for cross-country skiing and skating fans.
